1. Major/minor irration/annoyance/emotional endangerment on wavering tangents.. Yes, I'm talking about you and whoever else.

2. Wow, I don't know concert dress etiquette, so I fail at life. However, I do know the sort of discernment I bother myself with.

I'm sitting outside the Library@Esplanade waiting for it to open in about 32 minutes or so. I'm supposed to be in school, but I detest the idea of having to participate in mindless games meant to stimulate revelry among students. I wonder when they'll realise that not everyone is capable or keen when it comes to reducing themselves to doltish sheep. I'd rather shake hands and make witty conversation, thank you very much.

BIRTHDAY RESOLUTIONS

It didn't occur to me that prior to the day, I was actually planning to post this on my birthday because I was busy wallowing in self-pity for having to nurse a fever, so here it is. Now that I'm 18, I should start saving money, start trying to make money (when time permits) and start going to all the Souwax/Peaches type gigs at above-18 places (which is probably where the money will go to). Everything will probably improve/deteriorate/manifest itself on fate's own accord. Not that I believe in fate, it's just a convenient term to throw around when you're trying to say you're going to let life/blame what life has been like on chance. Okay, that's all I can think of now. School starts next Thursday! ARGHH ORIENTATION.

BUFFALO SOLJAAHH

And as the systemic omnipresent trait of capitalism goes, time is money, money is sacred and all-important, hence give minimal, cost-effective amounts of time to kids finding their way about life and all its mysteries. If they fail, we'll just whip out the old book of convenient adages(which neoliberalism has christened completely rational in all aspects) and flip to the "Failure 101" section, and simply proclaim life to be such.

I had one chance, and I did all but do it justice. But make no mistake, I am not delusioned by the universal deception of sympathy, and reserve that I am fully aware of its nonexistent relation to to practical norms. I'm just thinking within tangents of a very tolerant livejournal.

Notable artists involved in past shows include Lee Wen, Tang Dawu and Chng Seok Tin.

Witness, experience and get close to contemporary art works and performances within the city-centre intimate interior spaces, occupied by some of Singapore’s artists. Episode5 brings the audience to view art presented in the artist-run-spaces and studios, situated in one of Singapore’s culturally rich districts.

Don’t miss the show – one day only.
31st December 2006 from 12noon to 12midnight
Various venues at Little India: Collective artists’ studios in Singapore - Donna’s studio @ 15C Mayo Street, Your Mother Gallery @ 91A Hindoo Road, The Other House @ 66 Rowell Road & Celebrations for the New Year included!

Check event details and schedule below or at www.tav.org.sg

Supported by National Arts Council

“Time Show”, was first held in 1989-90 at the original site of The Artists Village in Jalan Ulu Sembawang. It was a 24 hours New Year’s eve to New Year ’s Day event. The first “Time Show” was organised by the first generation of artists who were at that time, staying and working in the dis-used farm houses and chicken coops that were converted into multiple art studios and gallery spaces at Jalan Ulu Sembawang. Artists who had been working in the numerous projects during the earlier years of TAV and who are still current members of the society include Tang Da Wu, Han Sai Por, Chng Seok Tin, Juliana Yasin, Koh Nguang How and Lee Wen. Other artists who had been actively involved in the past include Amanda Heng, Vincent Leow, Jason Lim, Wong Shih Yaw and Zai Kuning.

The “Time Show” was organized without any funding and although the location of the village site was not easily accessible by public transport, it was able to attract a sizable audience. It became a prime example for artists’ initiated events in Singapore for potential considerations and manifestations. Following this event a number of New Year’s Eve events were held at other venues like the Substation and Fifth Passage.

The most significant follow-ups included “AGA-Artists General Assembly” organized in collaboration with “Fifth Passage” in 1993-94. The concept grew to a one week multi-disciplinary event starting on 25 December 1993 ending on 1 January 1994. It attempted to provide a platform for dialogues and forums between different disciplines such as poetry, literature, theater and visual arts practitioners. In 1999 a new generation of artists including, Jeremy Hiah, Lina Adam, Kai Lam, Tien Woon organized “Post-Ulu”. The title referring to the fact that this new generation had not seen the original site of the village but adopted the idea of working together as a collective with similar ideals.

The Artist Village will be presenting: “Episode5” in the spirit of the inaugural “Time Show” concept. “Episode5” would like to provide a platform to showcase the diversity of contemporary art practices in Singapore. In response to ‘Give Peace a Chance: Redux’ by Lee Wen with Kai Lam , Episode5 will gather works that reflect on the past as well as works that celebrate the coming of something new. We hope that in holding this project on the 31st December 2006, viewers and participants will come together to reflect on the year and actively make the coming new year a more peaceful one.

In this 2006 event, we will be showcasing established as well as up and coming visual artists of diverse creative backgrounds, with a wide range of art practices which includes, video art and performance art that will be presented by locally based and overseas artists. We will also be engaging with the general Singaporean public through artists conducted workshops, artists-meet-the-people sessions and on-going project presentations of individual artists that will bring the local community closer to the appreciation of local visual arts practice.

The objective of this event is to celebrate the coming new year as well as to provide the general Singaporean public an understanding of the works of local contemporary artists and to foster the ongoing relationship between The Artists Village and its motivated concerns on the developments of local cultural practices and the promotion of Singaporean contemporary art practice to the Singaporean public.

We hope to involve more participation from the public and hope to offer them a meaningful alternative to celebrate their new year.

to the ends of teenage conformity and back

It's been pretty long since I last said anything proper here.. Blame the exams, school, the lack of exams and school (hence lack of direction), semi-hardcore party nights (and I really mean semi) and prepping for gigs. I'm not saying not being in school is making life miserable, rather, adapting to life without school after devoting somewhere between 3 to 4 months to the lugubrious pursuit of a Good Score For The O Levels, which include staying home and trying my best to resist distraction, has left a habitual impression on my lifestyle. Therefore, it goes without saying that my almost clumsy and sudden post-exam liberation has left me feeling more than a little... lost.

The result? Loads of free time, sans schedules to follow, ridiculously early morning rituals to obey, archaic bits of knowledge to commit to memory, etc, thus providing little 'incentive' to enjoy the 'distractions' I not so long ago found myself madly craving for. Movies credible critics helmed as "easily the movie of the year" or "must-watch" didn't seem to provide similar desperation to watch it did a week ago. The same went the pile of books I vehemently swore I'd read had suddenly lost my vote of... vehemence. Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil didn't seem so interesting anymore. I found I didn't really need to know why the eventual successful of cohesion in society rested in the proverbial End Of Faith. And how fucking utilitarian is Freakonomics, really?

I do not know how many of you feel or felt this way post-O Levels, and to be honest with you, it scares me to think that the functionalist litmust test and all its manifestations actually provided me with solace. Is it me or was I enjoying conformity and all its glorious *cough* trappings for awhile? Is rote-learning really more gratifying than getting lost in the jangly reverberative sounds of Camera Obscura? Is securing a place in a capitalist-run Future more interesting than the metaphorical explorations in Moon Palace? Am I finally seeing the light the Lee institutional agenda and the great holdings of Temasek have been trying to show me for the last 17 years? Fuck, no.

All it took was quiet nights out with the girlfriend and friends, belting out Bon Jovi (I was drunk. Read on please.) and songs from Up The Bracket in drunken stupors (you see? I haven't gone hair metal at all.) doing my 'listening homework' (Muse, The Hong Kong, Dirty On Purpose, Special Needs and other assorted hipsteresque namecheck-worthy bands), perusing through pages of magazines of favourable content, and eventually picking up Freakonomics to read on lethargic afternoons and lonely 3 AM periods to have me feeling whole again.

So hello, December!

Chenquieh.

Functionalist examinations
Faux hipsters who are tragically in reality inept ah lians
E_______ problems
R_______ troubles
Them not knowing
The g_________ c____ing

-

Jimi Hendrix
Lobose
True friends
Music in general
Pina Coladas, vodka martinis, and Margaritas on the beach
The g_________

Naivete, desolate and struck by life's recent revealing of truths
approaches a homeless man with a crude handwritten sign
promising answers to questions about our protaganist's new-found nemesis.

Hello, I want to be disillusioned.
But why, son? It is illusion that sustains happiness.
If that is so, sir, then the very fundamentals I've held on to are, farcical?
No, son. Your fundamentals are illusions for a picture that requires paradox.
Please explain, sir.
You see, what life is about son, is really equillibrium. Life is as peachy as it is morose. Human beings are horridly selfish, and thus, equillibrium is inevitable. A more necessary question, my dear boy, is "is it really all worth it?"
